Volcom Fiji Pro – Don’t Miss It

The Volcom Fiji Pro is right around the corner, and there is plenty of excitement in the air as the fourth stop on the ASP World Tour looks to have good conditions for the contest. The contest runs from June 2-14, with a $450,000 prize purse, and features the top 34 surfers in the WCT rankings. You can even watch the heats live at the Volcom Fiji Pro website.

Fiji is a South Pacific paradise with some of the world’s best waves, and the contest is being held in the heart of the South Pacific swell season with stages being held at both Cloudbreak and Restaurants. The contest will also mark the return of hot young surfer John John Florence to the lineup as he has missed the last two events due to a foot injury.

Kelly Slater says, “Cloudbreak is the best wave on earth”, and this iconic reef break has all of the contests excited to show the world what they can do in the water. Cloudbreak is a wave that tests the surfer’s all-around ability including both tube-riding and big turns, with unpredictable barrels and what seems like perfect waves everywhere you look. The challenge will be for the contestants to pick out the best two waves to ride on which they can get a long tube ride with multiple maneuvers mixed in.

Restaurants is a smaller, more-perfect wave, with peeling lefts along a shallow reef. Jordy Smith, coming off a win in Brazil, says: “Restaurants is probably from favorite wave in the world away from home: I love that spot.”

Besides having near perfect waves, Fiji is a beautiful tropical paradise with friendly locals and breathtaking scenery. If you want to take a break from surfing, you will find it a very relaxing place to hang out. Fiji has a significant amount of tourism and many people visit the Nadi and Denarau islands where you will find soft coral reefs and plenty of places to scuba dive. Fiji has several popular tourism destinations. They include the Coral Coast, Mamanuca Islands, and the Yasawa Islands. There are also many popular tourist attractions and a large number of them are free. The Botanical Gardens of Thursten, Sigatoka Sands Dunes, and Colo-I-Suva Forest Park are three great options, if you are staying on the Mainland (Viti Levu).
